The historical journey of Dien Khanh Citadel:
In 1793, under the command of Lord Nguyen Anh (later King Gia Long), the war against the Tay Son army came to an end. The resounding victory brought Lord Nguyen control over the land of the South Central Coast. Recognizing the strategic importance of Dien Khanh, Lord Nguyen decided to build a solid citadel here to protect this region.
Dien Khanh Citadel was built with the goal of protecting the South Central Coast from enemy invasion. It was once the administrative center of the region under the Nguyen dynasty and has witnessed many major historical events.
The unique architecture of the citadel:
Dien Khanh Citadel was built in the Vauban architectural style, a popular military architectural style in Europe in the 17th-18th centuries. The citadel is shaped like an irregular hexagon, with six gates (East, West, South, North) strategically arranged for optimal defense. Each gate is built with watchtowers for soldiers to observe, and the corners of the citadel are equipped with forts for placing cannons. Inside the citadel, the royal palace, the residences of officials, and other supporting structures make up a living and working area for the court.
The defense system of Dien Khanh Citadel is a harmonious combination of Western architecture and local terrain and materials. The earthen rampart, over 2.6 km long, is reinforced with bamboo and thorny plants, forming a strong defensive layer. Outside the citadel, a deep moat from 3 to 5 meters forms a solid defensive layer.
